    GLOSSARY

    Lead scoring.

Lead scoring ranks leads by their likelihood to convert, using rules or models over profile and behavior data. Its marketing power comes from feeding scores back to ad platforms as qualified-lead events, so campaigns optimize on quality instead of volume.

    In short

Lead scoring ranks leads by their likelihood to convert, using rules or models applied to profile and behaviour data such as job title, company size, pages visited, and email engagement. Its familiar use is internal, helping sales prioritize. Its marketing power comes from a second use many teams miss: feeding the score back to ad platforms as a qualified-lead event, so campaigns optimize on lead quality rather than raw lead volume. Without that feedback loop, a platform optimizes toward whatever produces the most form fills, which is often the cheapest and worst leads. With it, the platform learns which audiences produce leads that sales actually pursue and close. The requirement is a pipeline that can take the score, or a qualified-lead flag, and deliver it back to the platform against the original click. That closes the loop between the CRM’s judgement of a lead and the ad platform’s optimization, which is where lead scoring earns its keep for marketing.

    The loop most setups skip

Scores that live only in the CRM improve sales prioritization but leave ad platforms optimizing on raw form fills. Mapping score thresholds and stage changes back to Meta, Google, and TikTok as conversion events closes the loop.

What changes when the loop closes

Delivery shifts toward the audiences that produce qualified leads. Cost per lead often rises while cost per qualified lead falls, which is the trade every lead-gen team actually wants.

How does lead scoring improve ad optimization?

A lead-gen advertiser optimizing to form fills drowns in low-quality leads. Sending only sales-qualified leads back as the conversion event teaches the platform to find people who resemble the leads that close, and cost per qualified lead falls.
