Do we still need gtag.js?
A lightweight client-side tag still initiates measurement, but it talks to your own first-party endpoint, such as collect.yourbrand.com, instead of Google's shared domains. The heavy lifting, event enrichment, PII stripping, and forwarding to GA4, moves server-side through sGTM or the Datahash server, which is what reduces the loss caused by ad blockers and tracking prevention.
What events are supported?
The full GA4 event model, including recommended events, custom events, ecommerce items, and user properties, is supported. Whatever you send today through gtag or GTM can be routed server-side without a schema change on your end. After cutover we verify event parity in GA4 DebugView and reporting to confirm nothing was dropped or duplicated in the move.
Does this affect GA4 quotas or data quality?
Standard GA4 collection limits, event and parameter counts, still apply since the schema is unchanged. Data quality typically improves because events blocked in the browser by ad blockers or tracking prevention now arrive through your own endpoint, so expect reported sessions and conversions to rise slightly after cutover as we close that gap with your backend numbers.
